Back Pain

Back Pain Treatment in Rhode Island (RI)

1

Do you have back pain in Rhode Island? If so, you’re not alone – at least four out of five adults will experience it at some point in their lives. Back pain can have a specific cause, such as degenerative disc disease, or more general, such as muscle strain.

Chiropractic Care for Back Pain

Chiropractic manipulation is a popular and effective treatment for back pain. In numerous controlled clinical studies, spinal manipulation is preferred over more invasive or drug based treatment.

“[Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy] in conjunction with [standard medical care] offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard care, for men and women between 18 and 35 years of age with acute low back pain."
Goertz et al. (2013), Spine

Our Rhode Island chiropractor Dr. Mark Breiding specializes in the treatment of back pain, helping his clients become pain free through a combination of spinal manipulation, physiotherapy, prescribed exercise and, often, foot orthotics. Lower back pain is typically classified as either acute or chronic:

  • Acute back pain is short term, generally lasting from a few days to a few weeks. Some acute pain syndromes can become more serious if left untreated. If you have back pain, it’s better to be seen sooner rather than later.
  • Chronic back pain is generally defined as pain that persists for more than three months. The pain may be progressive, or may occasionally flare up and then return to a lower level of pain. With chronic pain, the exact cause of the pain can sometimes be difficult to determine.

How Does Dr. Breiding Treat his Patients for Back Pain?

There are the three stages to getting you feeling better fast.

1. Consultation.
Dr. Breiding will meet with you briefly at our RI practice to gain a better understanding of the underlying reason for your pain. The initial consultation helps to determine a diagnostic impression and ascertain your needs and expectations.

2. Examination.
Dr. Breiding then takes a medical history, performs a physical examination, and prescribes diagnostic imaging or lab tests to determine what course of treatment is appropriate for your back pain.

3. Treatment Plan.
Dr. Breiding then prepares a treatment plan individualized for your condition. His treatment plan may involve one or a series of manual adjustments in which he will gently shift your spine and/or joints, using a controlled correction of the joint to improve range and quality of motion. If he believes it would be helpful, he will also incorporate nutritional counseling and exercise/rehabilitation into the treatment plan. The goals of chiropractic care include the restoration of function and prevention of injury in addition to back pain relief. And, best of all, chiropractic treatment is drug-free!
